Overview
I partnered with the program's founder and lead instructor to translate a CPUC grant mission into a structured, 8-hour bilingual digital literacy course for the greater Los Angeles area. Starting from a hybrid course outline, I converted the material into a fully built English program in Wix Online Programs, checking in regularly with the stakeholder to keep content aligned with real classroom needs. While I collaborated closely throughout, I drove the core instructional and design decisions. Once the English version was approved, I built out a full Spanish adaptation, then trained the stakeholder on LMS administration so he could independently manage and deliver the course to future learners.

Challenge
Many Los Angeles residents lack the foundational digital skills needed for everyday tasks like job applications, accessing services, and basic online research
For some, the barrier starts even earlier: without reliable computer access, there's no way to build those skills in the first place
The task: Turn a scattered, hybrid course outline into one cohesive, self paced 8 hour program, in two languages, that a true beginner could complete independently, without adding overhead for a small instructional team
Solution
Built a fully self-paced, 8 hour digital literacy program in Wix Online Programs, sequencing lessons from foundational concepts to practical, real world tasks so learners gain confidence step by step
Developed the English version first, meeting regularly with the stakeholder, the program's founder and lead instructor, to validate pacing and content against what is most essential to developing digital literacy
Adapted the full course into Spanish once English was approved, going beyond translation to add region specific guidance like navigating language settings and using translation tools
Trained the stakeholder on LMS administration so he could independently manage, update, and deliver the course to future cohorts, ensuring the program's long term sustainability
Design Process
Intake and structure: Took the stakeholder's existing hybrid course hour outline and mapped it into a logical, self paced online sequence, identifying where content needed to be broken down further for a beginner digital audience.
English build first: Developed the full English course in Wix Online Programs, checking in with the stakeholder at key milestones to validate content against real learner needs before moving forward.
Bilingual adaptation: Rebuilt the course in Spanish, adapting rather than directly translating, adding culturally relevant resources and guidance specific to Spanish speaking learners navigating English default platforms.
Accessibility first design: Prioritized plain language, minimal cognitive load, and consistent, predictable navigation throughout, so users with little to no prior tech experience could move through the course independently.
Handoff and sustainability: Trained the stakeholder on the LMS so ownership could transfer smoothly, ensuring the course could keep running and reaching new learners without requiring ongoing design support.

Knowledge Checks
To reinforce understanding of the material, I designed intermittent check ins throughout the course covering the most important topics. Participants had to score 70% or above to continue on with the program, ensuring core concepts were retained before moving forward.
Tailored to Each Unique Population
In order to better meet the needs of each unique population, I tailored the check-in questions.
For example, I changed the phishing email examples to be in Spanish instead of defaulting with the English version of the emails to deepen understanding.
Outcome
1,031 participants enrolled in the course
100+ free computers provided to income eligible participants, removing both the skill and access barriers to digital participation
Participants left better equipped to apply for jobs, access services, and engage in an increasingly digital world, supporting greater economic mobility and self sufficiency across the LA area.
